The purpose of this blog post is to go over the various ways that my website has changed since the begining of this semester, and analyze what could have caused those changes. Using Google Analytics reveals that 50% of site traffic comes from search traffic. This means that looklistenlike.com is showing up in the search engines, specifically Google in my case from looking at the sources of visits. Analytics also revealed that 80% of page visits are new viewers which leaves a 20% returning viewer rate. The new viewer rate is higher than previously and I think this could be due to the improvement in keywords, phrases, and optimization of search engine results using Google AdWords. When viewers do visit looklistenlike.com it shows that they stay for and average of 1 minute. This value hasn’t changed throughout the semester much, but I plan on it improving as I add on to the website in the next year. Total page views since the beginning is 514. I have to admit that I am happy with these results. In the beginning when I started this website, and was just excited to come up with a domain name; I didn’t know anything about internet marketing. Now I am fully capable to build, run, and maintain a website and have done so with looklistenlike.com
Google Tools
There are many important things that I have learned in Strategic Internet Marketing and I figured I should share some. The first is to keep in mind that when you are making a website there are many various tools to your disposal. Google Analytics helps track and display the activity that occurs with your website. Use it to find where traffic to your site comes from, display what type of viewers they are, what sections of your site get the most attention, etc. Google AdWords lets you input keywords that describe your website in order to optimize search engine results. Google makes it simple and fun to improve your website. Without these two tools I can guarantee that my website would not have done as well as it has. WordPress is another great tool when creating your website. WordPress makes it easy to change your theme of your page as well as the content. They have an easy to read, easy to navigate service. Even the most novice user should be able to figure out how to improve their website!
Future Plans
I plan on continuing my internet marketing exploration. I have grown to actually enjoy being able to share so much information on a large scale. I have discovered how the internet has really developed an amazing way of communication. Prior to taking this class I viewed the internet as just a thing, a means to facebook, twitter, and Google. Now I see it as more of a living, ever developing tool. It is constantly being improved and needs to be in order to keep up with the fast paced world. As for looklistenlike.com, I plan on expanding it and having blogs about music, movies, and books. Look forward to being able to see my artwork as well. I plan on making looklistenlike.com a true expression of myself and my interests that I share with the various viewers of my page. In order to learn new things about internet marketing I plan on keeping in touch with my smart professor, Dr. Theresa Clarke, whether that’s through twitter, or her information packed website.
Through my
exploration of Google Webmaster tools I found that Google makes it possible to track and improve site performance. Marketers should use these tools such as keywords to know what customers are inputting to search for information and products. It provides insight of how Google actually sees your site. To encourage repeat users you may want to consider using subscriber stats. This will allow you to keep and updated profile of changes within your site for returning users/ subscribers. Crawl errors are a useful tool when finding any URL’s within your site that don’t function properly. Marketers may also consider using Crawl Stats to see and track the Googlebot activity on your site in the past 90 days. This can provide information on what is being used and where you may want to make changes within your site. For my site I found that I may want to use the HTML suggestion tool and find out what I should do to increase traffic to my site. If there is a feature on Webmaster Tools that I would like to learn about it would be the Malware portion of the tools. I’m interested in a step by step process of how to have malware installed and activated for my site. Since it is what protects your site from harmful viruses and connections then I think it is important to know how to properly use it to your advantage. For our internet marketing class we were privileged enough to have Ms. Deb Van Horn come in and talk to our class about how social media is making an impact on industries such as insurance. Ms. Van Horn mentioned how there is a trend in insurance companies starting to make an appearance on social media sites such as Facebook and twitter. There are many benefits to being involved in social media as a company. There is an influence that you as a company can have on sales. You build a relationship with the customers as well as encourage feedback to improve operations. While engaging in social media you are informing the customers about your product or making them aware that it exists. Lastly by partaking in social media this creates a two way communication between the company and its customers. Ms. Van Horn also taught us that there is such as thing as an engagement rate, which can be found by adding up all the likes, comments, and wall posts, giving you the amount of engagement or customers. On top of Facebook Ms. Van Horn made sure to include the importance of just looking after a person website. Making sure to manage all content that is being seen by the viewer. How many forms of advertising can be confusing and that decreases the amount of site traffic that comes in. In addition she also spoke about the importance of LinkedIn and how having one can really help you out in the professional world. Ms. Van Horn made a point to say that you need to make sure everything on these social media sites is appropriate. That future employees and peers look at these pages and don’t want to see embarrassing party pictures. I’d like to end this blog by thanking Ms. Van Horn, V.P. Support Services at Rockingham Group, If you would like to contact her and find any more information out feel free to at: LinkedIn or Twitter. For further information regarding internet marketing feel free to visit Dr. Clarke at her website.
Recently my roommate convinced me to watch a documentary called Thrive. I didn’t realize how much this movie might affect my everyday thoughts and some of my everyday actions. The purpose of the documentary is to reveal what is really going on in the world and why we are not thriving to our full capability on this planet. It goes into detail of tracing the money and finding out who really is running the world. The narrator Foster Gamble maps out how we can follow the world power all the way to the top oil/ gas companies in the world. Gamble brings to mind the idea of a torus. He shows that the earth has natural powers that revolve around the shape of a torus. That if we capture this energy there is a limitless amount that could supply the whole planet. There is an invention that is shown in the video that is claimed to be invented by Adam Trombly. There have been recent article written and news that has come out that shows the actual inventor is David Farnsworth. Regardless of the inventor though the machine works by using the natural current of the torus energy to make two magnets move which creates friction which produces energy. The only problem is that anyone who tries to build the invention has been stopped by the major oil companies in one form or the other. By watching this film I’m not recommending that we all go and try to build our own torus generator, but I do recommend everybody watch this documentary. Below is a picture that represents the natural torus energy that is surrounding our earth. It’s real and its waiting to be discovered by everyone. In my product development class we spoke about bottled water and the perceptions that are coming out of their products. The main companies included in this article were Dasani, Aquafina, and Fiji Water. The article is called Zero Calories by Charles Fishman; Alex Pasquariell. The article begins by talking about how through time society has shifted from using tap water as the norm and water fountains all around the community to single individual bottles of water. With the fast pace of things nowadays people find it convenient to grab a bottle and go. Have a portable container to drive to work, or go to your workout with, and when your finished you can just throw it away right? Wrong. There lies the biggest problem of all from this operation. The waste effects from bottled water are amazing. Just to give an idea of how many bottles roll out daily, the largest water bottle factory in North America is located in Maine and has a staging area out back of the factory to hold 24 million bottles before they’re shipped. More than half of those bottles will not return through recycling but will end up in a land fill. Whats equally as bad is that companies such as Fiji, give the perception that their factories are just bottling water out of a sparkling clean creek. That the water your drinking is natural and un-altered and that the area it comes from is untouched and unaffected by industrialization. When in reality the local area in Fiji that produces the water can barely provide clean water for the residents. The factory puts off waste and is ruining the environment around the factory. As long as they keep their problems in Fiji and keep supplying the U.S. with water then there’s no worries. I think this form of marketing needs to be changed. We need to see the affects of bottled water and make the combined effort towards using reusable water bottles. If we don’t all take action towards protecting our planet and stopping false marketing then who will?
Twitter recently has emerged as a social media giant next to Facebook. There are many things though that twitter offers that are not able to be offered from Facebook. In the past hour of exploring twitter I have found that it is much more real time than what other social media offer. Updates are posted immediately and the posts are restricted to a certain amount of characters, limiting the amount of unwanted traffic and posts. Its also much easier to follow (add) someone and then delete them if you don’t like what you’ve been seeing. I think this in turn helps the user feel like they have more control over what is being viewed. From a marketing aspect, twitter has many advantages. It’s an easy way for companies to promote their brand/product in a very easy and affordable manner. The number of people that they can reach is unlimited if they just post their company to a couple peoples wall then friends of those people will be able to see it quickly. Also its an easy way to research and find out what trends potential customers might have and where they might fall with their needs and desires. Twitter is the new age of social media. Its instant, fun, and at the same time not completely addicting. It requires less time to check and can be used in many professional manners. I just hope it doesnt follow the same path as Facebook where people write useless tweets telling the world goodnight, or about how they bought this and that when nobody really cares.
So I chose to change my theme on mywebsite. I went to the search box and made sure to click my favorite color green and picture blogging at the bottom. The search result returned the theme Ali Han Neon created by Ali Han. I chose this theme because I knew that it was visually appealing and really captured the attention of people that might visit my website. It also represents myself well in the fact that I like to have fun and go out ont he weekends where the neon lights are always shinning. No changes really occured in the site except for the manner in which the dashboard is displayed is no longer up front and in your face as my previous theme made it.
